Periodontal Plastic Surgery and Tissue Grafting in Simi Valley

If you are experiencing excessive gum recession, which results in exposed tooth roots, then periodontal plastic surgery and tissue grafting may be the solution for you. Gum graft surgery is a procedure done to repair the issue and prevent additional gum recession and bone loss. Gum grafts cover tooth roots or help develop gum tissue due to gingival recession. The gum graft is harvested by taking gum tissue from your palate or another donor source that will cover the exposed tooth root. Depending on the severity of your condition, a gum graft can be done to a single tooth or several teeth.

Tissue Grafting Procedure

When you arrive at the office, your periodontist will administer local anesthesia to the surgery site, which is done to numb the area. While not common, sometimes general anesthesia may be required depending on the patient’s condition. However, for the most part, local anesthesia is used for the procedure.

There are three types of gum grafting that can be done and depend on your circumstances, including:

  • Free gingival graft: This procedure involves harvesting gum tissue from the roof of your mouth, which will be sutured to the area in need of gum tissue. If your gums are thin, then this is a common solution to add extra tissue to your gums to prevent further recession.

  • Connective tissue graft: This procedure involves harvesting a flap of skin from the roof of your mouth and tissue from under the flap, which is called the subepithelial connective tissue. The subepithelial connective tissue is then removed and stitched to the gum tissue surrounding the exposed root.

  • Pedicle graft: This procedure involves harvesting the tissue from the gum around or near the tooth being repaired. The flap, also known as the pedicle, is only partially cut away so that the other edge stays attached. The gum is then pulled over the exposed root and sutured into place. This type of procedure is only done when the patient has plenty of gum tissue near the tooth.
